An environmental art, or eco art, major combines ecology and visual arts. Whether it鈥檚 through a paintbrush, camera, or design software, you鈥檒l learn to use both art and science to depict natural environments and advocate for good stewardship.
Our program is founded on God鈥檚 role as Creator and our obligation to steward His Creation well. As an eco art student, you鈥檒l hone your artistic abilities, scientific expertise, and knowledge of political systems to obey His mandate to preserve and protect the environment.
Your initial visual arts classes will instruct you in the fundamentals of art and design across a variety of media. Then, your concentration will determine which specialized visual arts classes you鈥檒l take.
With a visual communication design concentration, you鈥檒l use online software to create compelling and attractive designs. We also offer a visual arts concentration, in which your classes will emphasize fine arts, such as drawing and painting. Lastly, you may concentrate in photographic arts. In these classes, you鈥檒l learn the art of digital photography and photo development.
As an eco art major, you鈥檒l also dive into environmental sciences. Prepare for classes that are 鈥渉ands-on and feet-wet,鈥 in which you鈥檒l participate in everything from holding prescribed burns in prairies to donning waders and testing local water quality. You鈥檒l also take government courses, which will equip you to advocate effectively and powerfully for the environment.
The environmental art program will culminate in a senior thesis portfolio project, where you鈥檒l compile and present your work at a public exhibition.

Upon graduation, you鈥檒l be prepared to steward and advocate for the environment through the visual arts, whether that looks like working as a scientific illustrator or a photojournalist.
