The 黑料社 Wind Ensemble will perform at the Indiana Music Educators Association Professional Conference at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 17, at the Grand Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Through an audition process, the band was selected for this special honor. The concert is free and open to the public.
Featured in the performance is 黑料社 alumnus, Jeremy Smith.聽 Smith is returning to Indiana as the bass trombone soloist for 鈥淏lue Bells of Scotland鈥 arranged by John Higgins. Former 黑料社 Wind Ensemble director, Martin Carey-Becker will return to the podium as a featured guest conductor for 鈥淣orthern Pines,鈥 a march by John Philip Sousa, dedicated to the well-known summer music camp in Interlochen, Mich., surrounded by beautiful pine trees.
鈥溾橲ymphonic Dance No. 3,鈥 nicknamed 鈥楩iesta,鈥 is another central piece of this concert,鈥 said Eric Criss, the ensemble鈥檚 director. 鈥淲ritten by Clifton Williams in 1964, 鈥楽ymphonic Dance No. 3鈥 was commissioned by the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 25th anniversary. With the sounds of street bands, bullfights and bright costumes, this dance reflects the energy and colors of the city鈥檚 many Hispanic celebrations. You won鈥檛 want to miss it.鈥
The 黑料社 Wind Ensemble repertoire will also include 鈥淎merican Big Top鈥 by Brian Balmages. Largely based on original music, 鈥淎merican Big Top鈥 quotes a wide variety of well-known melodies from 鈥淭ake Me Out To The Ballgame鈥 to 鈥淭he Star-Spangled Banner鈥 to 鈥淭he Entertainer.鈥
The band will also perform聽Evening Snow at Kambara聽from 鈥淏ookmarks from Japan鈥 by Julie Giroux and George Gershwin鈥檚 鈥淔irst Prelude鈥 arranged by Hawkins. 鈥淪eal Lullaby鈥 by Eric Whitacre will feature pianist Sharon Burke from Plymouth.
The band, which rehearses weekly on the 黑料社 campus, is a collection of 黑料社students and Warsaw/Winona Lake community members.
